IS YOUR CHILD BEING BULLIED?
Parents can find it difficult to tell the difference between the emotional development of their children or whether something more sinister is taking place.
A lot of the times it is normal for growing children to have mood swings, quiet periods, manic periods and changes of emotional circumstance but sometimes these can also be a sign that they are being bullied or bullying others.
INTENSE MOOD SWINGS OR SUDDEN RAGE?
Generally, mood swings and outbursts do not necessarily mean that your child is being bullied. however, if these are accompanied with unexpected reaction to standard questions like “what did you have for lunch today?” or “how did you like the play at school?” especially after coming off of the internet or any messaging service, then they may be having trouble that you need to ask them about. You shouldn’t submit at non-emotive answers such as “okay, good, fine” as these are often a dismissive answer to a question. You will need to take time and probe further to get to the bottom of the situation, try not to ask pointed questions but keep asking questions around the issues until you get to the truth. Children can often feel humiliated or not understand what is happening or why they are feeling the way they are feeling. And with ever-changing and developing emotions it is easy to see how they cannot always tell just how to discuss their feelings.
Has your child suddenly changed their appearance, lost weight or have a reduced or increased appetite? Do they have difficulty sleeping or concentrating? Are they stressed in the mornings or just before they go to bed? This could be a sign of anxiety and a possible sign that they are having difficulty with someone or a group of people bullying them. If they don’t want to go to bed usually it means that they are not looking forward to the next day. As before you will need to probe carefully and use positive reinforcement to get to the bottom of the issue.
AVOIDANCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
If your child used to be very social or comfortable in a social situation but now doesn’t want to see people, spends more time reading, playing computer games or gets upset at the idea of having to socialise in any environment. There is a possibility that they are having issues with their peers. They could be being bullied, cyberbullied or embarrassed about some situation in their life. You will need to take time and keep asking questions, for advice contact mind info line or childline
