3 reasons to worry about spyware

Did you know: 99% of computers are vulnerable globally.

Obviously spyware is not something that you would like to have on your computer, tablet or mobile phone but should you be worried about spyware? Some of the stories I have heard are just scary!

  1. Spyware can record phone calls made on a mobile phone on which it is installed; it can also allow remote users to listen to conversations. It can monitor SMS, email, voicemail messages, whatsapp and facebook messenger applications; it can allow the attacker access to photographs, videos, address books, and calendars and can also tracked your movements via location.
  2. Spyware can control and view any device attached to your computer, seeing through webcams, listening to microphones and logging your keystrokes.
  3. Spyware is ridiculously easy to get infected with and not as easy to guard against

You can get infected with spyware by:

Opening an email, going to an infected website, viewing an infected advert in a legitimate website, installing freeware or even by downloading compromised legitimate software.

The best protection against spyware is good browsing habits, ad blocking software and regular antivirus and anti-malware scanning. Ensure that your browser, operating system, and software have the latest updates and security patches. Set your browser security and privacy levels higher. Use extreme caution if you frequent file-sharing sites. Don’t click on pop-up ads or click bait.
